Doc Savage His Apocalyptic Life Philip José Farmer Win Scott Eckert Books Reviews

I have to say after reading Tarzan Alive, which was brilliant, that I really was expecting better from this. It reads more like a guide to the various novels without really drawing one in like Tarzan Alive. it's clear Farmer loves the stories and characters, but this is just a so-so read.
The Farmer classic "bio" for Doc Savage is back in print.
Of course over the years, fans have spotted flaws and mistakes in Farmer's work ... but still this is a fond memory for many Doc fans of old.

I did subtract one star because if memory serves correct, the older versions had more diagrams and sketches inside.

Perhaps copyright restrictions prevented using those old diagrams -or- my memory is wrong.

This also reminds me that Farmer might have been a bit obsessive about sex in view of some of the things he hinted at in this bio .... and also his Doc/Tarzan team up.
This fictional biography discusses the life of Clark "Doc" Savage, Jr. The story is told as if the events published in the pulp magazines were fictionalized accounts of real events. Farmer not only summarizes the events of the most prominent of Doc's adventures but provides chapters on the allies, gadgets, and villains that Doc faced. Appendices provide a chronology of the adventures, a bibliography of Doc related stories, and a genealogy of Doc that details his links to Tarzan and other prominent figures. Whether you are new to Doc or an old hand this book will enhance your study of the Man of Bronze.
Excellent book, I highly recommend it.
not a novel but a writer's eye Who's Who of Doc' world and the extension of Farmer's Wold Newton theory that ties many of the Pulp and other fictional character's into a family tree relating Doc, to the Shadow, The Avenger, Alias the Spider and even Fu Manchu.

The book goes into detail about Doc, his amazing five, their two pets and his sultry cousin Pat using the 181 pulp novels as reference. Great detail is given for his headquarters (purportedly the 86th floor of the Empire State Building), his warehouse (the Hildago Trading Co) and his unique vehicles. The book touches on the history of each prominent character, Doc's technology, his "Rehabilitation" Hospital where the defeated villains were taken, brain surgery performed and then retrained and reintroduced back into society. and the stand out villains them selves.

Doc's history runs from the dawn of the 19th century and their entry into World War I where the group met. Doc's emergence during the Great Depression and his final mission against the communist menace in 1947.
Farmer does a good job of collating the original 181 adventures into a somewhat integrated narrative. Great fun for fans of the Bronze Giant who is the Knight of the Running Board.
I've loved Doc since I was fifteen or so, when I found the 1970s reprints in the public library in my hometown. I read Farmer's fictional biography of Tarzan around then too. Farmer has been one of my favorite writers ever since, because he was never afraid to do what he needed to write a ripping yarn.
