The snow came late to Salt Lick Gap that year. It blanketed the Blue Ridge all the way to the top of Balsam Mountain.... So begins the bittersweet tale of Ma Clanton, an elderly grandmother and her faithful cat Scruffy. Since her children have grown up and moved away and following her husband s death, she is quite lonely and sad. One cold winter Thanksgiving day, two young children come knocking on her door. A simple request leads to a miracle in Ma Clanton s life as her hardened heart is slowly warmed by the children s love. The book s timeless message of using our talents to enrich the lives of others teaches children and adults a valuable lesson. This picture book for elementary school children is set in the mountains of western North Carolina where Jeanne, a native North Carolinian, attended college and the couple spent many happy days exploring, hiking, camping, and fly fishing. The inspiration for The Doll Dresser was Jeanne s mother whose hobby was rescuing broken dolls and making them beautiful again for young children. Proceeds from the book s sales will be used to establish a scholarship fund in memory of James.

I don't have children so I read this at my local library because I know the authors - I worked for James many lifetimes ago... and was DEEPLY saddened by his death. A finer man never lived and his wife Jeanne is an AMAZING educator, mother (grandmother!) and wife - both are/were very talented and Jeanne has a passion for children and their education - this couple's love for the people, the lifestyle and the area in general of the Blue Ridge Mountains area is beautifully portrayed in this book - a timeless tale for children AND adults - drawing on the love of family and friends, garnering strength from one another, sharing love across generations, painting a portrait not of poverty stricken, uneducated "hillbillies" rather a portrait of courage, love and respect - the ties that bind families through all manner of crises and hard times - courage, love and respect, a foundation upon which ALL lasting relationships are forged. I'd love to see it become a classic on children's bookshelves. This is a testimony to a couple who lived to serve the Lord and make the world a better place -- with proceeds benefiting a scholarship in honor of James, I hope this sells millions of copies and grows to serve children everywhere, but particularly the children of that region. It can help provide them with an education and lead them back home to literally start a movement of improving the Blue Ridge and the entirety of the lower Appalachian population. It's home to generations of proud people who don't believe in "taking hand outs" particularly "government" hand outs and choose instead to remain deeply impoverished and in recent years turning out thousands of addicts (of all ages) to the scourge of poverty oxycodone - the "poor man's heroine". I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO READS BEDTIME STORIES TO THEIR CHILDREN. Colorfully written, it will hold your child's interest and open doors for dialogue about things that really matter. It's not fluff about amphibians with swords or machines that turn into larger warring machines - it's real people, real feelings, real lessons in life that every single person at some point in their life faces. It will open doors to talk about so much with your children - just how DO we face life's problems and why? Do you run, bury your head in the sand or do you tackle life's issues head on, holding on to those who love you for support? WONDERFUL BOOK. I really hope we see more from Jeanne. I loved James but I am convinced that she is the driving talent behind The Doll Dresser.
